Article - The Storyteller’s Toolkit: Forty Years of Storytelling, in Your Ears Every Week

Sita Brand has told stories in prisons, on festival stages, in funding meetings that mattered rather more than anyone let on, and in the quiet moments that shape a life. She founded Settle Stories in 2010, trained with Dr Clarissa Pinkola Estés, and was ordained by Thich Nhat Hanh. She has spent forty years learning what actually makes a story work, and rather more usefully, what makes one fall flat.

The Storyteller’s Toolkit is where she hands that over, one episode at a time. No lecture, no jargon, just a working storyteller opening up the parts of the craft that usually stay backstage.

What You Will Actually Get Each Week

The Storyteller’s Toolkit is not a show about performance tips for people who already call themselves storytellers. It is built for anyone who has ever wanted to explain something properly and watched the room’s attention drift halfway through. Teachers. Parents. People pitching an idea at work. Anyone holding a family story they would like to get right before it is gone.

Each episode takes one tool from the craft and puts it to work: how to open a story so people actually want the rest of it, how to find the moment in a memory that carries all the weight, why the stories that feel most personal often land hardest, and how to edit without losing the heart of what you were trying to say. Sita brings a real example from four decades of practice to each one, so the idea never stays abstract for long.

Why a Podcast, and Why Weekly

Craft is built through repetition rather than a single big reveal. A weekly rhythm means each episode can go deep on one small, usable idea rather than trying to cover everything at once, which tends to be where most storytelling advice quietly falls apart. Listen to one episode and you will have something to try today. Listen for a few months and the whole shape of how stories work starts to come together, techniques you will keep reaching for long after the episode has ended.

Who It Is For

Some listeners are working towards StoryLab, Settle Stories’ six-week course, and use the podcast as the warm-up. Others have no plans to take a course at all and simply want to tell the story at their sister’s wedding, or the one about their grandmother, a little better than they managed last time. Both are exactly who this is for.

There is also a quieter audience for this podcast: teachers building storytelling into their classrooms, community organisers trying to bring people together around a shared history, and anyone who has ever sat in a meeting watching an idea die simply because it was delivered as a list of facts rather than a story worth following. Every one of those listeners is reaching for the same underlying skill, just in a different setting.

You do not need any experience, and you certainly do not need to think of yourself as a writer. Sita’s whole argument, after forty years, is that storytelling was never a gift reserved for a lucky few. It is a craft, learnable the way any craft is learnable, and this podcast is simply forty years of that craft, broken down into pieces small enough to use on a Wednesday afternoon.
