Storytelling for Radical Citizenship

About the course

Quakerism and Storytelling have often gone hand-in-hand. The principles of Quakerism—also known as “S.P.I.C.E.S” —are Simplicity, Peace, Integrity, Community, Equality and Stewardship. Quakers often share spiritual insights or “testimonies” around these core principles. In this sense, storytelling in Quakerism is not only a means to entertain and excite an audience, it is also serious religious business. This course hopes to teach you the history of Quakerism in an accessible way and teach you ways to weave Quaker values into your own stories, improving the delivery of your storytelling and having you consider how you can infuse your own values into your stories.

Meet the instructor: Mark Borthwick

Mark Borthwick is a storyteller and Quaker from Ulverston in Furness. His home town has always been intrinsically linked to his practice – Ulverston is not only at the foot of the Lake District (home of the Romantics, who shaped our ecological understanding) but also the birthplace of Quakerism.  Mark has been a storyteller for around ten years with most of his work being in a social context. He has worked in the vegan movement, in foodbanks, on council estates, as well as at the government level, exploring and teasing out the narratives that, when changed, can have huge consequences for society. From February 2020 to August 2020, he was the Artist in Residence at Hawes Side in Blackpool where he launched the ‘Story Line’ project in response to the pandemic’s isolation.
