About the course

As storytellers, we take our audiences on journeys into unfamiliar worlds, and the way we do this is through memorable, relatable characters that they can instantly connect with. In this online course, professional storyteller Jon Buckeridge will guide you through the process of character creation, providing you with valuable tips and techniques for your storytelling toolbox. Divided into four modules, the course explores physicality, voice, relatable characters, and the art of positioning characters to change the narrative. From regional dialect to archetypes, fatal flaws to challenging expectations, this course will equip you with the skills to craft strong characters that bring your stories to life.

Meet the instructor: Jon Buckeridge

Jon is a storyteller, actor and writer based in the West Midlands of the UK. Since graduating from the University of Wales in 2007, Jon has been storytelling professionally for over a decade, developing broad experience in stage and screen performance, as well as establishing himself as a gifted singer and multi- instrumentalist. Jon specialises in taking classical stories, myths and legends, and injecting them with modern-day sensibilities, energy and tone, whilst still maintaining their roots and honouring their legacies.

Jon is an experienced writer, having published numerous works, including A Long Road Home, Dreamkeepers, and Cinderella. His one-man production, The Forgotten Tales, received critical acclaim at venues and festivals across the UK.

In 2014, Jon established Parable Arts to explore the art of storytelling, bringing forgotten and half-remembered stories to life, and providing them with a platform on which to shine. In addition to Parable, Jon is an ECSPC qualified performance combat instructor and fight director, and runs his own stage combat company called Action Combat Choreography.
