This page has been put together to help teachers and educators understand a little more about the stories that will be shared in Arabian Nights – Settle Stories 2021 World Book Day performance. We hope this will help you come up with your own follow on activities after the performance and we have also provided some themed discussion points.

We will start the performances with a song about the Storytelling Teapot which you can see here. It’s in Arabic as no English version is available. This is how we will learn it – pupils will learn some Arabic sounds whilst doing this.

The stories

During the show we will share a selection of short stories.

The Genie in the Urn

This is a twist on the tale from 1001 Nights. An urn finds its way into a fisherman’s net. The genie trapped in the urn offers the fisherman to make any wish come true, in exchange for his escape. The fisherman’s wish is immediately granted, but at what cost? Click here for a link to the adult version of the story.

Themed discussion points with the children: Do you wish that all your wishes could come true? What if only one of your wishes could come true? What would that wish be?

The Golden Lira

Saeed was lazy. He was so lazy, it was crazy! One day his father decided to teach him a lesson. Will the plan to teach lazy Saeed the value of work, work? Click here to view the story.

Themed discussion points with the children: Why did Saeed hold onto the last Golden Lira before giving it to his father? Why was this Golden Lira more precious to Saeed than the rest?

The Wolf and the Fox

Wolf and Fox were friends, but Wolf was very mean to Fox, and he was always playing tricks on him. One day Fox decided to teach Wolf a lesson, but who is going to have the last laugh? Click here to view the story

Themed discussion points with children: If someone is mean to you, do you have to be mean back? What is the best way to let a friend know that they are being mean? And how should we respond?

The Um Sulaiman song

We’ll also learn (in both Arabic and English) the Um Sulaiman song:

Tik tik tik Um Sulaiman

Tik tik tik where’s your husband gone?

Tik tik tik he’s in the field

Eating prunes and pomegranate seeds
